February 1 marks the first day of Black History Month. Hop on BART to learn more about Black culture and history at events, museums and festivals throughout the Bay. We have a full list of ways to celebrate Black history here and a few Lunar New Year celebrations listed below. Jazz Master, 11-time GRAMMY nominee and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, Kenny Barron, performs four different projects over four nights at the SFJAZZ Center. The pianist starts his residency performing with his longtime trio, followed by a concert with his quintet, an evening of Brazilian explorations, and an adventurous performance that will be completely improvised from start to finish. Take BART to Civic Center/UN Plaza with the SFJAZZ Center just 0.5 miles away.

See the first solo exhibition in SF by internationally recognized artist Takashi Murakami. Murakami is a major figure in global pop culture whose influence extends to fashion, consumer products, curation and entertainment. With a boldly colored, upbeat style and a pop sensibility that draws inspiration from anime and manga, Murakami’s accessible and fun creations deliver more than meets the eye. See the ongoing exhibit at the Asian Art Museum, which is 0.2 miles from the Civic Center/UN Plaza BART Station.
 
"MJ: The Musical"

Michael Jackson is one of the greatest entertainers of all time. "KOOZA" is an innovative journey viewed through the perspective of The Innocent, an endearing yet naïve clown looking for his place in the world. "The Wiz" returns “home” to stages across America in an all-new Broadway-bound tour, the first one in 40 years. This groundbreaking twist on "The Wizard of Oz" changed the face of Broadway – from its iconic score packed with soul, gospel, rock and finger-snapping ‘70s funk to its stirring tale of Dorothy’s journey to find her place in a contemporary world. The Golden Gate Theatre hosts the award-winning show 0.2 miles from Powell St

Museum of African Diaspora (MoAD)

Join MoAD and Black Freighter Press for the final event in their four-week "Community Voices: Poets Speak series." This group reading and celebration will feature six poets sharing original poetry written in response to the current exhibitions on view at MoAD. Featured poets include Briana Grogan, D'mani Thomas, Porsche Veu, LadiRev, Raymond Nat Turner  and Duane Horton. Participate in the conversation or sit back and enjoy the light refreshments 0.2 miles from Montgomery

Flower Market Fair

The Chinese New Year Flower Market Fair is held each year on the weekend before Lunar New Year Day. The Flower Fair is the place to come to purchase fresh flowers, fruits, candies and brand new supplies for the home to bring in and begin the new year. Delight in performances of traditional Chinese magicians, acrobats, folk dancers and opera as you take in the beautiful fragrances of spring. The market it 0.5 miles from Montgomery Station in the heart of SF Chinatown.

SF Civic Music Concert

Head to Herbst Theater for an evening of "Mozart to Mendelssohn: Neo/Classical Jokes" presented by the SF Civic Music Association. The free show will feature ten symphony numbers played by musicians from all backgrounds (not just classical). Since this is a free event, seats are on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early. Herbst Theater is 0.4 miles from Civic Center/UN Plaza.

The SF Sketchfest is a nationally recognized comedy festival that mixes national headliners, local favorites and the best up-and-coming groups from North America for a month of sketch, improv, stand-up and alternative comedy. The comedy festival will take over venues throughout San Francisco, so visit the ticket page to see the full schedule. 

Town Hall Theater Sing-Along
Feb. 3 | Lafayette

Town Hall Theater in Lafayette hosts an evening of singing, trivia and raffles! This popular event series returns with "Hairspray" as the theme. At 5:30 p.m. make your way into the venue and grab a signature themed cocktail and raffle ticket. Once in your seat, the fun begins with a few rounds of team trivia. Make sure to warm up those vocal cords because promptly at 7 p.m. the sing along begins. Sing your heart out 0.9 miles from Lafayette Station.

Black Girl Art Show
Feb. 4 | 19th St/Oakland

Spend your Sunday evening paying homage to the brilliance and creativity of Black female artists. This captivating showcase brings together a diverse array of artistic expressions, narratives and perspectives under one roof. This event will include live creating with hundreds of pieces available for purchase and a DJ playing all the hits with plenty of room to dance. The event is happening at the California Ballroom, 0.3 miles from 19th St/Oakland Station.
