The last weekend of February is a celebration of community with parades, art markets and cultural events throughout the Bay! Visit SF's historic Chinatown for the world-famous Chinese New Year Parade and Community Street Fair this Saturday, and round off your weekend at the esteemed Black Joy Parade on Sunday in Oakland's downtown. The springtime sunshine will be making its first appearance of the season this weekend, so head outside, hop on BART and enjoy it while it lasts. Are you hosting an event near a BART station? The Year of the Dragon is coming in hot with festive celebrations all over the Bay! The Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is the largest Lunar New Year parade outside of Asia and was named one of the top ten parades in the world by the International Festivals & Events Association. Celebrate the new year with your community in San Francisco's historic Chinatown, and don't forget to wear red. Get off BART at Montgomery St and emerge into a world of fiery celebrations. 
 
Black Joy Parade

The Black Joy Parade is a hyper-positive celebration of the Black experience. The first of its kind, the parade exists to provide the Black community and allies an experience that amplifies the African diaspora's contribution to history and international culture. In 2018, parade founder Elisha Greenwell dreamed of uniting a diverse community by creating an event to express each of our unique contributions to the Black experience. Be creative, be open, be present and be free at this year's Black Joy Parade. The celebration will take place just outside the gates of BART's 19th St. Oakland Station. 
 
"MJ: The Musical"

A young Lenape woman, Jane Snake, returns to her ancestral homeland, Manahatta, to work as a securities trader on Wall Street – the once-walled street built by enslaved Africans to keep the Indigenous Lenape out. Set against the backdrop of the Occupy Wall Street movement and across time, Manahatta draws parallels between the forced removal, taxation and fiscal impact on Native Americans during the 2008 financial crisis and the 1626 Dutch purchase of the island of Manahatta/Manhattan. The Aurora Theatre Company presents this stunning performance 0.1 miles from Downtown Berkeley.

"KOOZA" is an innovative journey viewed through the perspective of The Innocent, an endearing yet naïve clown looking for his place in the world. Chinese Community Street Fair
Feb. 24 - 25 | Montgomery St

Become immersed in the sights and sounds of SF Chinatown. The Chinatown Community Street Fair takes place the weekend of the Chinese New Year Parade and is an opportunity for attendees to experience Chinese cultural arts such as lantern and kite making, calligraphy, folk dance and puppet shows. Traditional and modern entertainment performances will be on the main stage throughout the fair weekend. Enjoy colorful dance performances, acrobats, lion dancing and magic demonstrations. Take part in all the fun and magic just 0.7 miles away from the Montgomery Station. 

Garden at the Flea Pop-Up Vintage Market

Garden at the Flea was founded in 2017, seeking a space to provide beautiful new green spaces for San Jose residents and opportunities to support local vendors and artists. This garden and flea market hybrid event features sustainable California flowers and plants, and the best vintage selection in the Bay. Additionally, the space has a beer garden, a food truck park and exciting live performances. Stop by to shop for thrift apparel, sports gear, collectibles and more from a wide range of vintage sellers and creative artists! Find your way to the Beryessa/North San Jose BART Station and this market will be 0.7 miles away.

Youth Speaks Teen Poetry Slam
Feb. 23 | Lake Merritt

The Teen Poetry Slam is a friendly and competitive space for emerging young writers and performers to flex their skills on the mic in a fun and safe environment. Original poems, songs, freestyles and speeches are performed in under just 3 minutes, and always from the heart. This event is being held at the OMCA, produced by members of SPOKES and Youth Speaks. BART is also partnered with Youth Speaks on the "BART lines" youth poetry contest, now taking submissions through Mar. 8. Find the poetic inspiration at OMCA just 0.1 miles from the Lake Merritt Station.

Oakland Chinatown Lantern Festival

Visit Oakland's Chinatown this weekend to celebrate the Lantern Festival and the Year of the Wood Dragon! This year represents a time of solidarity, hope, abundance and action. The Lantern Festival rounds out Lunar New Year celebrations and represents a time of love and hope. Join the community to build spaces for community care, healing, joy, safety and celebration, and support local and emerging businesses in Oakland Chinatown. Ring in the new year in Oakland's historic Chinatown, just 0.4 miles from the Lake Merritt Station.

Hella Plants Market Black Planter Party

The Black Planter Party is set to be a full day of plants and fun! Celebrate local Black-owned plant businesses and engage in interactive activities such as terrarium-building, a soil bar station and more. This party will have food, music, drinks and the opportunity to make new friends. Plus, this part will be the exclusive launching of Hella Plants Market's The People's Free Plant Program. Kids attend for free.
