“Don’t think you can’t do it”: Women in engineering at BART on their triumphs and challenges

“Don’t think you can’t do it”: Women in engineering at BART on their triumphs and challenges
When Phoebe Cheng was little, she loved stories. She found that reading and storytelling could transport her to far away places, help her stand in someone else’s shoes, and shed light on why things are the way they are. In school, Cheng discovered new passions – this time for math, physics, and computers. These three subjects, she found, could solve even the most inscrutable puzzles. And engineering combined all three of them.

There are hundreds of independent bookstores in the Bay Area, whose wares range from used books to new books, children’s books to anarchist books, and everything in between. Many of these stores are easily accessible by BART. So, hop on the train and grab a new read from one of the below bookshops.

From BART bars to arcades: The creative ways people plan to repurpose legacy BART cars
Photo courtesy of Hernandez-Eli Architecture. There’s something oddly majestic about seeing a BART car “in the wild,” or in a place you wouldn’t expect it to be, far from its straight and narrow tracks. Soon, this will be a regular occurrence for Bay Area residents as BART announces the eight finalists that have been selected to receive legacy BART cars in the coming months. The legacy cars will be replaced by BART’s Fleet of the Future.

BART has hundreds of engineers working to improve the system and the rider experience mostly hidden from public view.

Restrooms at Powell Street Station have reopened
On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at 11am, BART held a ribbon-cutting event to mark the reopening of the Powell Street Station restrooms that have been closed for more than 20 years. Restrooms at 10 of BART’s underground stations have been closed since 9/11 because of safety concerns. Powell Street Station’s two public restrooms are the first to reopen as part of the agency’s efforts to prioritize the needs of transit riders, especially now during the pandemic recovery.

BART trains don’t start rolling until around 5am but Yolanda Barbosa and Natalie Robinson are typically well into their shift before then. Barbosa and Robinson are two of the BART Police Department’s new Crisis Intervention Specialists (CIS). They’re part of a team that represents a new approach to improving safety at BART, one that recognizes that not every problem on the system requires a response by an armed police officer.
