Custom-built bikes and primo customer service are staples of Mission Bicycle, where you can see your dream bike design turn into a reality. Staying true to its Valencia Street address, it’s also a great spot for gift ideas for your favorite bike enthusiast. And for those soon-to-be bike enthusiasts, rentals are on hand for trial spins.Photo courtesy of Mission Bicycle.
Situated directly on Market Street, Huckleberry Bicycles has aided many a downtown commuter through unforeseen flat tires, broken lights, bent frames and more. Being near city shopping, it’s no surprise this bike stop dons its own beloved selection of bike apparel and shoes in addition to the usual mechanical musts. Photo courtesy of Huckleberry Bicycles.
This neighborhood favorite has been around with owner Paul Olszewski at the helm since pre-hipster 1985. Another longtimer alongside Olszewski has been Valencia Cyclery manager/mechanic Peter Shao, who’s been keeping local wheels turning for 30 years. These familiar faces continue to make available (and maintain) a slew of bike styles that run the gamut, including BMX, foldable, electric, kids and road bikes. Photo courtesy of Valencia Cyclery.
From wedding centerpieces to Hawaiian leis, Lydia’s Flowers can put together a formal arrangement for any occasion. A bamboo-lined shop in the heart of the Financial District, a quick walk from Embarcadero Station, it’s also a mainstay for local businesses that like to spruce up the office. As is evident by the name itself, The Flower Cart gets it right through its simple and classic approach to selling blooms. Load up on traditional daisies, lilies, roses and more, all within super quick reach from Montgomery Station. You’ll take your recipient’s breath away with a baby’s breath-filled bouquet by this old-school kiosk that leaves it to the flowers to make a fancy impression. Elizabeth’s Flowers is a family-owned operation that’s long been putting together exotic species and local organic blooms. In addition to burlap-wrapped bouquets and loose flowers sold by the stem, potted orchids and terrariums bring a healthy dose of living art to downtown’s One Bush Plaza.
The ambiance in Ampersand’s self-dubbed “barn-and-mortar” perfectly complements the goods on hand. It’s a rustic yet stylish flower shop that doubles as a design studio, and the eye for attractive detail is obvious upon entering its turquoise barn doors. Striking picks of flowers surround an adorable light-filled lounge area where you may want to stay and hang even after you’ve put together your choice picks.Photo courtesy of Ampersand.
This Mission favorite’s black-painted storefront serves as a striking backdrop to the parade of colors brightening its entry on Folsom Street. Inside the brick and mortar (they’ve also got a stand on Valencia Street), the serious array continues — from roses to orchids to succulents — and brown paper cones spill out a firecracker display of vibrant blooms.
