Craftsman and Wolves | 16th St Mission
This contemporary French-inspired pâtisserie café uses seasonal ingredients and traditional techniques in a modern setting. While their menu offers plenty of delectable pastries, fresh bread and light fare — Craftsman and Wolves’ specialty is “the rebel within,” which includes parmesan-asiago, pork sausage, scallions and a soft, cooked egg. The bread at Tartine Bakery is baked fresh every day in a wood-fired brick oven. Each loaf is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The bakery has reached cult status, however, not only for its bread. Tartine's pastries, tarts, cookies and confections are equally delicious. Loquat is a Jewish bakery specializing in babka, bourekas, cakes and pastries from the Jewish diaspora. If visiting with a friend on a Saturday or Sunday, try the weekend special: Kubaneh Platter for Two. The buttery dough rolled in nigella seeds is a Jewish specialty from Yemen and served with haminado egg, feta cheese and sauces. All baked goods at Loquat are perfectly paired with coffee and are so tasty that they'll make you want to come back time and time again. This old-school bakery in San Francisco's Chinatown offers sweet and savory delights. The oldest Chinese bakery in Chinatown is famous for its egg custard tarts, mooncakes and coffee crunch cake. Popular amongst locals and visitors alike, even former President Bill Clinton once stopped by Eastern Bakery for a mooncake. La Farine Boulangerie Patisserie | Rockridge
Open since 1977, La Farine Boulangerie Patisserie serves fresh breads, beautiful tarts, tasty pastries, cakes, and more. For those with food allergies, including gluten and nuts, this sweet bakery offers allergy-friendly treats to happily and safely devour. You can even get gluten-free hot dog buns for summer! Peña’s Bakery II | Fruitvale
This must-visit bakery near BART is a local favorite. Goodies include fluffy conchas, cakes, bread, custard-filled empanadas, and traditional sweet bread called pan dulces. Peñas Bakery II has so many tasty options you won’t have a hard time filling your tray. The owner, Ramon Peña, moved to Oakland from Mexico with the recipes from a traditional panadería.
