Places to volunteer in San Francisco

“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” — Desmond Tutu

Rather than spiral down a rabbit hole of feeling helpless when it comes to world strife, stay afloat with your heart full and your head held high. You don’t have to be a Pollyanna to buoy your spirit through acts that empower yourself and your local community.

It’s free and fun to connect with others when you volunteer, and we’re pretty sure spending time aiding in causes other than oneself will keep even the most cynical among us smiling. Because it’s never too late to start lending a hand, here are five disparate nonprofits in San Francisco where you can take BART to put your energy toward bettering the lives of your fellow man, woman and, yes, even dog.

Pick your cause and choose your selfless adventure that will prove good for the soul.

St. Anthony’s Foundation

Dedicated to its “Hope served daily” motto, St. Anthony’s dishes out so much more than food, though its revered dining room provides almost a million hot meals a year to those in need. In addition to prepping and serving feasts to combat hunger, volunteers can opt to help with the foundation’s medical clinic, educational technology lab, free clothing boutique, advocacy and administrative duties.
