See what's buzzing at The Hive
Long before Oakland’s Uptown District (Broadway and Telegraph between 17th and 25th) became a popular downtown arts and entertainment hot spot, it was the city’s main shopping district with department stores, service-oriented shops, and even a cluster of auto dealerships. Many of the historic buildings along the Broadway corridor have been salvaged and repurposed, including a Dodge dealership that is now the home of a restaurant and beer garden, Drake’s Dealership, part of a group of businesses that reside in the Hive, a retail and housing development.
In 2014, this mixed-use space welcomed Impact Hub Oakland, and since then, the ground-floor retail options have blossomed. Its location, only a couple blocks from BART’s 19th Street Oakland station, and near the Paramount and Fox Theaters, and other entertainment venues, makes it a great place to visit any day of the week.
Besides the places to eat below, the space is also home to Peoples Barber & Shop and Truve private training facility and wellness center. The Hive’s parking area often turns in to an impromptu gathering spot, especially after dark. It’s also popular during the city’s First Fridays event. Hop on BART and explore the options.
The crown jewel of this East Bay brewery’s new location is its beer garden, an inviting outdoor space decked out with Adirondack chairs, fire pits, and a live music stage. Order pizza, poutine, or a healthy salad and sample the company’s rotating line up of 32 beers on tap. Don’t forget to pick up a growler to take home.
Firebrand Artisan Breads
Any grain geek will tell you that Firebrand bread is the real deal. This is the first retail outlet for this wholesale bakery whose breads and pastries are favored by restauranteurs all over the bay. The retail and dining space offers views into the baking operation, and with a cup of Highwire and a warm pastry, it is a great spot to watch the bakers work or catch up on your own work at one of the tables inside. Consider stopping in for breakfast as early as 7 am, or queue up for a sandwich at Pal’s Takeaway, the space’s permanent pop-up sandwich vendor.
Noted for having one of the largest tequila and mezcal selections in the country, Calavera restaurant and bar and its regional Mexico-inspired menu has attracted crowds and great reviews since it opened last year. Consider stopping by for happy hour on a weekday, or booking a reservation for a celebratory meal and enjoy dishes like Birria de Chivo ( chile-chocolate braised goat, roasted tomato broth, mezcal preserved cherries). Check their website for special themed dinners and cocktail events.
