This weekend, support the Cal Bears as they take on Oregon State at California Memorial Stadium. It's Bay Area Appreciation Day. Festivities will be headlined by Bay Area music legend E-40, with promotions including a special appearance, E-40 bobbleheads for the first 5,000 fans and a custom Bay Area chain for students attending the game. Catch the action 1.1 miles from Downtown Berkeley. Head east on Center St. and see this map for the most direct walking route. Alternatively, catch a free shuttle from Downtown Berkeley BART with drop-offs near the stadium. Service runs 2.5 hours before game time and continuously until one hour after kickoff. Service will resume at the start of the fourth quarter for postgame transportation.
Litquake: San Francisco’s Literary Festival

Litquake, the Bay Area's beloved literary festival, is bringing a diverse array of events that cater to literature lovers. The festival offers an exciting lineup of readings, panel discussions, film screenings and themed events held at various venues throughout the Bay Area. The festival draws renowned authors from around the world, providing a week-long celebration of literary arts for all audiences. The SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star resident ensemble representing what's happening now in jazz. For this season, the septut collaborated with the Fine Art Museums of San Francisco to compose a new work inspired by The de Young Museum's "About Place" collection featuring 42 works by more than 30 Bay Area artists. The exhibition explores how artists relate to their environments through place; place as the physical land, place as heritage, place as the imaginary, and place as belonging, and each selected art piece will be creatively displayed visually using the auditorium's immersive projection system during the performance. Catch the soul-stirring musical, “Choir Boy,” in its last weekend at Ashby Stage in Berkeley. This is not a coming-out story. It's a story about the power of self-love. Pharus attends the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys and is the lead singer for their renowned choir. He is not only open about his queer identity, he also questions long-held traditions. With contemporary arrangements of traditional African American spirituals and dance, Choir Boy is a brilliant, moving, and uplifting play from Academy Award-winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney. Trick-or-treat on both sides of the Bay! On Oct. 25, trick-or-treat in Lafayette from 4–6 p.m. Take BART to Lafayette Station. Arrive in costume with a trick-or-treat bag in hand to visit participating businesses and fill your bag with sweet treats.
On Oct. 27, head to San Francisco from 11 a.m.–1 p.m. to trick-or-treat inside the Ferry Building. Get your face painted, create spooky crafts and watch a live pumpkin carving demonstration. Costumes are encouraged at this free, family Halloween event, 0.3 miles away from Embarcadero.
You can also head to Rockridge on Oct. 27 for their annual Halloween Parade. The Rockridge Public Library will open up its parking lot for kids' activities, storytime, crafts by MOCHA, music and more while merchants along College Avenue pass out candy to trick-or-treaters. Waverly Place is the spot to be this Oct. 26 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Arrive with costumes, family and friends to this Halloween event in the heart of Chinatown. Activities include pumpkin painting, a not-too-scary room, a trick-or-treat lane, a costume contest, carnival games, balloon animals, lion dances and more. Many local merchants are participating, like AA Bakery Café and House of Dim Sum, to name a few. Take BART to Montgomery St for Halloween fun 0.6 miles away at Waverly Place.
San Francisco’s “Civic Symphony” Concert

The San Francisco Civic Music Association presents "Civic Symphony" concerts at Herbst Theatre. This weekend, catch "Czech Masters" with music director Paul Schrage. The program includes Bedřich Smetana — Vltava (Die Moldau), Vítězslava Kaprálová — Partita for Piano and String Orchestra, Op. 20, Tamila Azadaliyeva, piano and Antonín Dvořák — Symphony No. 6, Op. 60.
