Woven Versus

Oct. 18–19 | Downtown Berkeley

8 p.m. | 2020 Addison St.

The songs in "Woven Versus" have historical and contemporary Persian classical text with themes encompassing separation, longing, isolation, hope, adaptation, belonging, connection and communion. These themes are deeply connected to the singer's personal experiences as a banned artist who has struggled for years to preserve the rich musical lineage of her beloved Iranian homeland, where musical practice and performance, especially by females, continue to be severely restricted by fundamentalist authorities. Witness vocalists Mahsa Vahdat and her sister Marjan Vahdat, 0.1 miles from Downtown Berkeley.

"Choir Boy"

Through Oct. 26 | Ashby
Times Vary | 1901 Ashby Ave.

The soul-stirring musical, “Choir Boy,” just extened its run at Ashby Stage in Berkeley. This is not a coming-out story. It's a story about the power of self-love. Pharus attends the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys and is the lead singer for their renowned choir. He is not only open about his queer identity, he also questions long-held traditions. With contemporary arrangements of traditional African American spirituals and dance, Choir Boy is a brilliant, moving, and uplifting play from Academy Award-winning playwright, Tarell Alvin McCraney. Take BART to the Ashby Stage to catch the show 0.1 miles from Ashby
