Whether you spell it “donut” or “doughnut,” the concept is essentially the same: a round piece of dough with a hole in the middle fried to golden perfection.

In recent years, the humble donut has become somewhat of an art form, especially in the Bay Area, where dozens of shops are slinging donuts that may be best described as “elevated.” Whether you take your donut classic-style, with sugar or glaze, or are looking for something a little more adventurous (chewy mochi donuts, anyone?), the Bay Area has it all.

June 3 is National Donut Day. It’s the perfect excuse to grab a freshly made donut hot out of the fryer.
