There’s no question that freshly brewed beer tastes better than the bottled stuff. The San Francisco Bay Area has a real thirst for locally made craft beer, even our ballparks have joined the fresh-brew trend. The San Francisco Giants' home stadium (Oracle Park) boasts one of the most cultivated craft beer offerings in the nation, and the Oakland Athletics acquired a retired BART train that will soon be stocked with taps and baseball fans. Our list of BARTable breweries has enough variety to turn the most diehard Coors fan into a craft beer nerd on the hunt for the freshest sour.

Daly City

Gilman Brewing | Daly City

This is the newest taproom for Gilman and the most convenient for BART riders. Their original West Berkeley location has been brewing beer there for more than seven years. They’re known for their farmhouse Saisons and interesting IPAs. The Daly City taproom carries a full lineup of the outfit’s Berkeley fresh brews. They also have a full-service gastropub with pizza and epic truffle fries. Take BART to Daly City and head 0.3 miles to 2001 Junipero Serra Blvd.

San Francisco

Local Brewing Co. | Powell St

If you’re a fan of hop-forward beer, Local Brewing is your place. This women-owned brewery and taproom is one of the first craft breweries in San Francisco to produce interesting and fun hop blends. The women started their journey in 2010 and continue to run a stellar operation. It’s the quintessential San Francisco brewery where loyal customers come in to nosh on wings and have a pint or two. Take BART to Powell St and travel 0.9 miles to 69 Bluxome St.

Cellarmaker Brewing | Civic Center/UN Plaza

Cellarmaker Brewing makes a big impact in a small brewing space and taproom. The brand is known for its balanced IPAs and porters. The taproom is airy with high ceilings. It’s a great spot to enjoy a beer in the afternoon before it gets busy, and seating becomes limited. No food, but their other location in the Mission serves pizza. A new location with brews and pizza will open in Oakland's Jack London Square this year. Located at 1150 Howard St, just 0.4 miles from Civic Center/UN Plaza Station.

Fort Point Brewing | 16th St Mission

Fort Point’s trajectory, from a production facility beneath the Golden Gate Bridge in the Presidio, to a robust canning and distribution footprint, is a classic San Francisco start-up story. The company’s Valencia location is its first beer hall, where the food is (almost) as important as the beer. Check out their sandwiches and small plates, in addition to a guest beer list. Look for their limited-edition Coven in honor of Women’s History Month, a rice lager with lavender and sage. Take BART to 16th St Mission and go 0.4 miles to 742 Valencia St.

Oakland

Buck Wild Brewing | Lake Merritt

Buck Wild is an all gluten-free brewery, which is pretty cool. The brewery and taproom have a large outdoor dining and drinking space, so stay for a beer or two and order food from the kitchen, run by San Francisco-based Kitava Kitchen. The menu is built around anti-inflammatory foods so again, look for dishes without gluten, dairy, soy, and refined sugar. Could this be the only brewery in the Bay where you actually feel better (and less bloated) after you leave? Take BART to Lake Merritt and go 0.3 miles to 401 Jackson St.

Ale Industries | Fruitvale

Many would argue that a beer is only as tasty as the community that makes it. If that is true, then the ales that come from this Fruitvale brewery are pretty tasty indeed. The brewery operates off of bio-waste—vegetable oil to be exact. Waste (grains) from the fermentation process is also repurposed, reducing what goes to the landfill. So when you enjoy a sour or IPA in their taproom, you can feel good knowing you’re supporting a business that cares about the environment and its community. It’s also a great place to cheer on Oakland Roots soccer games. Take BART to Fruitvale and head 0.3 miles to 3096 E. 10th St.

Federation Brewing | 12th St/Oakland City Center

With outdoor parklets built from repurposed shipping containers, Federation has a great outdoor-indoor vibe. The large footprint in Jack London District allows the business to host comedy nights and other events. The brewery’s award-winning IPAs and stouts are worth the visit, even without comedy or trivia. Pizza and burgers make bi-weekly appearances, but pizza must be ordered ahead. Take BART to 12th St/Oakland City Center and head 0.6 miles to 420 3rd St.

Original Pattern Brewing | Lake Merritt

Relatively new to Oakland’s craft beer scene, Original Pattern is a modern taproom with custom wood furniture, tufted banquettes, indoor plants and large picture windows. The beer menu features a few IPAs utilizing New Zealand hops and an interesting smoked coffee porter and sour lemonade. Food is provided by Good to Eat Dumplings. Bring the dog and the kids (or not) and consider it a great date-night spot. Take BART to Lake Merritt and go 0.5 miles to 292 4th St.

Dublin

INC 82 Brewing | West Dublin

Touted as Dublin's neighborhood microbrewery INC 82 has been serving fresh brews, cocktails and delicious eats since 2017. Unlike other breweries INC 82 boasts a full bar and a kids menu, making it a great spot for families. Open six days a week, you can reserve a table any night except Friday and after 9:00pm it turns into a 21+ space, so plan accordingly. INC 82 is located 1 mile from West Dublin Station at 7370 San Ramon Rd.
