This weekend, we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with music, activities, special guests, and commemorations. Additionally, with warm and sunny weather in the forecast, it's looking like a great weekend to experience the San Jose Berryessa Flea Market or to grab a takeout food special from one of the many restaurants participating in Concord and Oakland Restaurant Weeks.

Foodies rejoice! Concord celebrates its fourth annual Comfort Food Week, January 15-31 and once again, local restaurants will roll out their tastiest and most unique comfort-food fare along with tempting specials and discounts. This much-anticipated event draws critics, bloggers and foodies from all over the Bay Area and showcases Concord as a true destination for world-class dining. Join the Concord community as more than 70 restaurants come together to celebrate the local food scene at its best.

Kenny Garrett Quintet at SFJAZZ | Virtual

Coming up as a teen through the Duke Ellington Orchestra, later a member of Art Blakey’s vaunted Jazz Messengers, and serving a memorable five-year stint with the iconic Miles Davis, Kenny Garrett is “one of the most admired alto saxophonists in jazz after Charlie Parker” according to The New York Times. For this performance filmed in June 2019 he is joined by a fierce young quintet including pianist Vernell Brown, Jr., bassist Corcoran Holt, drummer Samuel Laviso, and percussionist Rudy Bird. Virtual streaming begins at 5pm with memberships available for viewing.

Oakland Restaurant Week: Final Weekend | Oakland

There's still time to take advantage of some amazing specials from your favorite local restaurants, breweries, wineries, food trucks, cafes, pop-ups, dessert spots, and caterers in Oakland. It's the final weekend with the specials wrapping up on Monday.

Composer Charles Gounod brings to life Shakespeare’s classic romance in a series of intimate, lush duets, and rollicking showstoppers, full of stolen kisses and swashbuckling fun. Experience love at first sight with Pati’s Romeo, a performance the San Francisco Chronicle hails for its “magical, indescribable charisma that radiates beyond the footlights and compels you to pay attention.” Get ready for an uncompromisingly beautiful vision of Romeo and Juliet, streaming directly to you starting Saturday, January 16, at 10am.

"Let Her Sing: A Celebration of Female Voices" at The Freight | Virtual

For the fourth year running, Diaspora Arts Connection is proud to present "Let Her Sing 2020: A Celebration of Female Voices," recorded live on December 3 at Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. Seven female vocalists from Iran, Lebanon, Vietnam, Kurdistan (Turkey), and the US come together with a group of exceptional international musicians to celebrate the female voice; suppressed, censored, and threatened in parts of the world. Get ready for an online event of exciting music and solidarity for the female voice. The show begins at 7pm and tickets start at $12.

Living Jazz: In the Name of Love | Virtual

Living Jazz invites you to celebrate unity and freedom in their 19th annual musical tribute honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. - In the Name of Love. The stellar lineup features locally and internationally known artists, activists, and spoken word artists, coming together to inspire hope and to use the power of music as a positive agent for social change. Living Jazz is dedicated to making this concert accessible to all by offering a "pay-what-you-can" admission. Tune in at 4pm for this special event.

San Jose Berryessa Flea Market | Multiple dates

The San Jose Berryessa Flea Market is steps from our Berryessa/North San José Station. The Flea Market is a not to be missed San Jose tradition where "one person's junk is another person's treasure." With over 120 acres of shopping, activities, and food vendors, there's bound to be fun around every corner. The market is currently open from Wednesday, Friday-Sunday, 8am-5pm. Walk-in admission is $2-3 depending on which day you go, and the entrance is located near Garden at the Flea and the East Lot.

SF Symphony "Throughline" | Virtual

“Throughline: San Francisco Symphony-From Hall to Home” originally aired on KQED in November and is now streaming worldwide for on-demand viewing. The vibrant program includes music by Ellen Reid, John Adams, Kev Choice, and Ludwig van Beethoven written specifically for digital medium and filmed in locations around the world, grounded with a local focus. Streaming is free so, kick back, relax and enjoy the sounds and sights this beautiful piece has to offer!
