We're excited about the recent news that California aims to fully reopen on June 15. As our economy continues to reopen, you'll soon start to see many more in-person events and general BARTable fun on our website. For now, continue to wear a mask and practice social distancing (even if you're vaccinated), and get ready for brighter days ahead. This weekend, find some yummy restaurant deals, see numerous top notch virtual performances, or head out to pick up some fresh organic produce. Let's go!

Toni Morrison's "The Bluest Eye" (April 9-May 21) | Virtual

Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison's debut novel, "The Bluest Eye" (which turns fifty this year), comes to Aurora Theatre in a stunning adaptation by playwright Lydia R. Diamond. Diamond expertly translates to the stage the emotional depths of Black girlhood, the poisonous effects of racism, and the heartbreak of shame in Morrison's work. Celebrated for a “profound and unrelenting vision,” (The New Yorker) Morrison sets The Bluest Eye in her hometown of Lorain, Ohio, and places three young Black girls—Claudia, Pecola, and Frieda—center stage as they strive to make sense of love, sisterhood, abuse, and hate. The show begins April 9 and runs until May 21. Tickets are $25.

Claudia Villela: Fridays at Five | Virtual

“A Brazilian-born genius with a blistering voice" (JazzTimes), the dynamic Rio-born artist Claudia Villela has developed a reputation as a singularly unique singer, pianist and composer, lending her five-octave voice to work with jazz luminaries Kenny Werner, Michael Brecker and Toots Thielemans. Villela has been a regular performer at SFJAZZ, and devoted this June 2019 evening to the music of the supreme Brazilian songsmith Antônio Carlos Jobim, featuring the GRAMMY-nominated guitarist Chico Pinheiro as a special guest. Streaming begins at 5pm.

Maurice Tani at The Freight | Virtual

Known for his wry/rye-to-romantic songwriting, agile guitar style and expressive singing, Tani’s particular flavor of Americana is a broad spectrum tincture of influences to cure what ails you. While rooted (at times distantly) in country music, his writing is centered on an urban-western perspective. Joining Tani are pianist Henry Salvia and the rhythm section of 77 El Deora regulars, bassist Mike Anderson, and drummer Ken Owen. Tickets are available by any donation amount starting at $10.

SF Ballet’s Program 04 “Jewels” | Virtual

A ballet in three parts, this is George Balanchine’s full-length masterpiece, inspired by displays at New York City jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels – Emeralds, Rubies, and Diamonds. Emeralds is a forest green meditation in long, romantic-style skirts, influenced by the French style of ballet. Rubies is like Times Square at midnight with bright lights, rushing crowds, and a touch of jazz. Diamonds is a glittering homage to Imperial Russia and the grand style of the father of classical ballet, Marius Petipa. Single stream 72-hour access available for $29 with digital packages available for the remaining season. Upload, sit back, relax and enjoy this breathtaking ballet from wherever you may be.
