There are few places where Bordeaux wine, organic produce and freshly baked goods are available on the other side of the street from a BART station.

Across the street from Rockridge Station in north Oakland, Rockridge Market Hall provides a one-stop, gourmet shop experience for shoppers of all backgrounds and budgets. Divided up into eight sectional shops in the same complex, Market Hall exudes more of an open-air farmer’s market atmosphere and window-shopping opportunity than the usual neighborhood supermarket.

Market Hall is very transit-friendly, which comes in handy due to its small parking lot. (Rockridge BART parking lot is across the street). The stores are connected by BART and by AC Transit buses 51A and 51B, two very popular bus lines which when spliced together run through Downtown Berkeley, Downtown Oakland and Alameda.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Market Hall staff works to ensure every shopper can enter and exit safely. Queues are common across most hours during service, as capacity inside the more popular shops are limited. Masks are mandatory, and hand sanitizer and sanitized baskets are available in front of the store entrances.

Arguably the busiest store in Market Hall is Market Hall Foods, the delicatessen, pantry and cheese shop corner of the complex. Gourmet dry pasta, cheese, olive oil and rotisserie chickens line the walls and shelves in the store. In front of the entrance currently stands a tower of holiday-related goods like chocolate, biscuits and panettone, an Italian sweet bread enjoyed during the holidays.

On its left side on Shafter Avenue, Market Hall Foods is flanked by Marin Sun Farms butcher shop, Hapuku Fish Shop which sell fresh seafood, Market Hall Produce and Paul Marcus Wines, all selling high-quality products of its own domain. On College Avenue side, Market Hall Bakery produces cakes and baked goods next to Highwire Coffee Roasters where queued patrons wait for their coffee and baked foods in the morning and afternoons.

During the holiday seasons, Market Hall curates its foods for the festivity-focused shoppers, by creating individual and family-sized Hanukkah menus – including latkes, chopped livers, and rugelach – and the Christmas menu featuring truffle mousse, braised duck leg, buche du noel and more.

For a BARTable shopping experience to prepare your holidays, Market Hall is ever prepared now as they were for years in the Rockridge area.
