The Castro Valley Farmers Market makes up one of the three East Bay locations where the Urban Village Farmers Market Association introduces local produce to local residents. This winter will be their second year of all-season selling in Castro Valley, and vendors are transitioning from sweet summer fruits to fall and winter roots.

Located in the far parking lot of the Castro Valley BART Station, this strip of vendors sell anything from gluten-free cookies and other baked goods, to seasonal produce, and even a selection of locally-caught fish. The cost of the produce ranges from around $2 to $4 per pound, and this market also accepts EBT cards and participates in market match to stretch out those grocery dollars.

Fresh fruit and juices

Andrea Boca, the market manager for the Castro Valley market, says her favorite meal to make when the temperature drops is a warm vegetable root soup. To make this at home, boil salted water with a chopped onion, oregano and other herbs, and pick up organic roots from the Castro Valley market. Chop up the roots and let them cook in your home-made soup!

At the Field of Greens Farm stand, mix and match roots like parsnips, turnips, different colored carrots, celery roots, and sunchoke (also known as Jerusalem artichoke) all for $3 per pound.  Helping the family-run operation in San Juan Bautista, Dimitri from Field of Greens says “you can close your eyes and pick one. They are all delicious.” The stand also sell watermelon radishes for the same price, which Dimitri recommend be eaten raw in sandwiches or salads.

This Urban Village market will have a lot of affordable local goods to offer this winter, so check this BARTable Castro Valley market off your grocery list!
