Tattoos in Japanese Prints | Now through August 18

Ever wonder where the dragon you saw on the arm of your barista originated from? How about the bold lion surrounded by peonies inked on the guy at the gym or the snake circling your own arm? Tattoos like these can be traced back to a famous series of 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints, which was inspired by a popular 14th-century Chinese martial arts novel. The Asian Art Museum's Tattoos in Japanese Prints recounts how these pictorial tattoos emerged in 19th-century Japan. Take BART to Civic Center/UN Plaza and walk five minutes to the museum.
