With the holidays comes a bounty of shopping lists for gifts, so buy local to support local at some of the best BARTable shops around. Here’s where to go to find just the right things for the women in your life to unwrap. Put a bow on it and you’re sure to put a smile on her face with the help of these hip spots.
Dandelion Post, located at 4243 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, is a 7-minute walk from MacArthur Station.
There’s a brand new go-to boutique on the Temescal block. Owned, operated, and tastefully stocked by Jaime Levine, Dandelion Post is aptly named because, yes, it caters to your lady’s wishes. Find locally designed fashion, bags, and jewelry at this stylish two-room shop that’s laden with natural light and natural woods. You can’t go wrong with SF brand Amour Vert’s black scoopback shirt or R.P. Miller ribbed striped tees — good for any season, alone or layered. A choice stocking stuffer for the new year? Astrology calendars by Oakland’s Chelsey Dyer are a win for every sign.
Alley Cat Books, located at 3036 24th St. in San Francisco, is a 4-minute walk from 24th St. Mission Station.
This adorable sister to Dog Eared Books down the way expanded the Mission family of bookstores in 2011. Boasting books (of course!), an art gallery, and a space for public readings and events, Alley Cat makes us purr. Find your beloved reader used vintage pages to breeze through, or look for something mainstream and modern — we recommend Brene Brown’s “The Gifts of Imperfection.”
Atmoic Garden, 5453 College Ave. in Oakland, is a 4-minute walk from Rockridge Station.
Oh, where the cute things never cease. This Rockridge hub of high-quality sustainable merch offers a mosaic of clothing, housewares, and knick-knacks with an emphasis on recycled materials. A fave find for your farmers’ market femme? We recommend the AG & Apolis Oakland Market bag made of jute with a waterproof lining that will have her shopping organic local produce in style. Throw in a rose petal-wrapped bundle of white sage for smudging and you’re earthy gal will be good to go.
Secession Art and Design, located at 3235 Mission St. in San Francisco, is a 10-minute walk from 24th St. Mission Station.
Putting the properly angled spotlight on artists and designers, this Bernal Heights haven for creatives hosts wall decor and so much more. Along with giving what will surely be received as a new favorite frameable piece, peruse jewelry and other wearables to complete your holiday list. Here, mixed media art and handmade gifts are picked by owner Eden Stein. We like the locally printed Mission Threads “Women’s Science Tee” for your fun ‘n’ fashionable brainiac, or Oakland jewelry designer Gina Rios’ Two Layered Ginko Necklace for a classy complement to any outfit.
Paxton Gate, located at 824 Valencia St. in San Francisco, is a 9-minute walk from 16th St. Mission Station.
This Mission staple is known for a bevy of quirky flora and dead fauna. Yep, the art of taxidermy lives at Paxton Gate. This is the hipster fave brimming with head-turning home decor, jewelry, stationary, and greenery certainly not of your garden variety. A sure way to impress both the traditional and out-of-the-box thinker? Curiously potted succulents and air plants, in terrariums and more, are an easy score to check off plenty from your list.
