BARTable This Weekend: Thanksgiving 2019

Burn some calories with a guided walking tour before your turkey dinner, take a break from Black Friday shopping (or your family), or Shop Small on Saturday with one of these BARTable events. We hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving! 

Editor's note: Before you go, please plan your trip with our Trip Planner to get estimated travel times as we have modified schedules over the holiday and the weekend. We will be running on a Sunday schedule on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be modified service on Friday. There will be single tracking on Sunday through Downtown San Francisco for cable upgrades, please expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

San Francisco Walking Tours by Downtown SF Stations

Walk the streets where railroad barons, silver kings, and other wealthy San Franciscans built lavish mansions. Learn about the heroes who struggled valiantly against the fires after the 1906 earthquake. Or check out San Francisco's northern waterfront that has long been a site of legendary innovation. All of these can be explored with free walking tours courtesy of San Francisco City Guides. Walks are rain or shine. Check out the tour schedule for Thursday as many of the tours are near Downtown SF Stations.

Gobble Gobble Give by Civic Center/UN Plaza

Looking to give back to the community? On Thanksgiving morning, volunteers will come together to gather dry goods, box warm food, and walk the streets of San Francisco to hand out care packages to homeless individuals and families. Bring a dish of cooked food, small toiletry kits, or clothing/blankets beginning at 10am at Slim's. Take BART to Civic Center/UN Plaza and walk 15 minutes to Slim's. 

San Francisco City Hall Lights by Civic Center/UN Plaza

Every evening at sunset, over 220 state-of-the-art LED lighting fixtures illuminate San Francisco City Hall's exterior. Normally, a soft white glow shows off the play of light and shadow on the full façade and dome. Frequently, special plaza façade lighting schemes honor or celebrate events, seasons, and holidays. On Thursday, see City Hall light up in harvest colors to celebrate Thanksgiving. Take BART to Civic Center/UN Plaza and walk five minutes to City Hall.

Illuminate SF Light Art Trail by Embarcadero

Christmas trees and holiday decorations aren't the only things that are glowing this holiday season. Illuminate SF is the annual light art festival that brightens all of San Francisco, Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. While there are more than 40 permanent and temporary light art installations throughout the city, they've hand-picked 12 that make for a fantastic light art trail that begins near Embarcadero Station. Experience this light art trail to keep your holiday season bright.

Plaid Friday by Downtown Oakland Stations

Plaid Friday celebrates the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. It’s a fun and enjoyable alternative to the big box store “Black Friday” consumer frenzy. Also, it’s a way to show your support for Oakland's local economy. So, plan to wear PLAID all day on Friday. Take BART to any Downtown Oakland Station and shop local. 

Macy's Great Tree Lighting by Powell St

The 30th Annual Macy's Great Tree Lighting will be celebrated with live performances by the San Francisco Opera; the Grammy award-winning San Francisco Boys Chorus; Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir; the cast of San Francisco Playhouse's 'Groundhog Day the Musical'; winner of season 16 of NBC's The Voice, Maelyn Jarmon; plus, a visit from the one and only Santa! The spectacular, reusable tree will be decorated with more than 43,000 twinkling energy-efficient LED lights and 700 shimmering ornaments. The festivities take place from 6-9pm and the tree is scheduled to be lit around 6:50pm (get there early for the best views). Take BART to Powell St and walk eight minutes to Union Square.

For the Culture: Black Women's Holiday Market by 19th St/Oakland

The Fourth Annual For the Culture: Black Women's Holiday Market at the Impact Hub Oakland, near 19th St/Oakland, features premiere Black Women artists, makers, and entrepreneurs. Purchase one of a kind holiday gifts- handmade jewelry, clothes, house ware, and apparel at the largest Black Women Holiday Pop Up in the Bay Area. General admission is free. and the market is open from 12-6pm. 

Ghirardelli Square's Annual Tree Lighting by Embarcadero 

Ghirardelli Square’s 55th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony will take place on Friday, November 29th, from 4-9 p.m. in the West Plaza. Join the celebration of the season with music by Kevin Toqe Music, crafts and a special appearance by Santa! Festivities kick off at 4pm with Santa lighting the tree at 6pm. Take BART to Embarcadero and transfer to Muni F line.

D.L. Hughley UNPLUGGED! by 19th St/Oakland

Actor, political commentator, radio host, author and one of the most accomplished standup comedians on the road today, D.L. Hughley is live at the Paramount Theatre in UNPLUGGED! Featuring special guests Luenell and Dominique. Tickets are available online and begin at $45.75. Take BART to 19th St/Oakland and walk five minutes to the Paramount Theatre.

Shop Small Saturday by All Stations

The quaint stores of our local shopping districts seem to sparkle a little brighter during the holidays. The antique shop with the bell on the door that greets you as you enter. The local baker offering seasonal treats. The neighborhood shop with the quirky knick-knacks for your mantle. This Saturday take BART to any of your favorite local shops and support the small businesses within our Bay Area community. 

Fairmont SF Gingerbread House by Montgomery St

For more than a century, Fairmont San Francisco has enchanted guests with holiday festivities and exuberant ambiance. This season, Fairmont’s elves are once again working overtime to create a dazzling, unparalleled winter display. Starting on Saturday, the hotel transforms into one of the world’s most beloved holiday destinations, where moments are turned into cherished memories. Fairmont San Francisco’s two-story, life-sized Gingerbread House in the hotel’s grand lobby has become a must-see attraction for guests from near and far. Take BART to Montgomery St and walk eight minutes to the Fairmont.

Asian Art Museum | Free Admission Day by Civic Center/UN Plaza

The Asian Art Museum is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian Art, with a collection of over 18,000 artworks spanning 6,000 years of history and it's open to public for free on Sunday (please note that it's based on capacity and is first-come, first-served). Some exhibits may require an additional fee and the museum is open from 10am-5pm. Take BART to Civic Center/UN Plaza and walk five minutes to the museum. 

2019 Etsy Holiday Indie Emporium by Embarcadero 

One of the biggest apps and sites synonymous with DIY, Etsy is bringing its online marketplace of creatives back to San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. The Indie Holiday Emporium is now in its seventh year, and the annual affair hits Pier 27 on Saturday and Sunday. Shoppers can peruse more than 100 vendors—mostly small, local artisans, while food trucks and bar service will make sure your bellies are as full as your shopping bags. Take BART to Embarcadero and hop on the F streetcar to Pier 27.

$5 First Sundays at OMCA by Lake Merritt 

On the first Sunday of each month, take advantage of $5 general admission to Oakland Museum of California, just steps away from Lake Merritt station. Check out one of the many galleries dedicated to the arts, natural sciences, and history of California. Want to check out No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man or any other special exhibition, it's an additional $5.
