Summer is winding down in most of the country, but the Bay is a special place and we know real summer is just beginning. Celebrate the arrival of September and the departure of your friends who went to Burning Man by enjoying a festival or two, a music block party and local culture.

CAL Football Season Kick Off Party by Downtown Berkeley

Downtown Berkeley Association is excited to co-host the CAL Football Season Kick Off party in the Downtown Plaza with Cal Athletics from 5-7pm. The evening will be filled with giveaways, fun photo ops, the Cal Marching Band and Dance Team, and of course, Oski. The fun takes place on the plaza directly outside of Downtown Berkeley Station.

Live on the Square: Final Day by 12th St/Oakland City Center

Jack London Square announced that after a successful 10 years, its popular “Dancing Under the Stars” summer dance series will expand to “Live on the Square”, a free festival featuring additional entertainment, food and fun in addition to the weekly dance lessons. Don’t miss the last event of the season, taking place from 6-11pm. Take BART to 12th St/Oakland City Center and walk 12 minutes down Broadway to Jack London Square.

Hiero “Family Day in the Park” Free Festival by 12th St/Oakland City Center

Kick off Hiero Day Weekend with a free day of community and activities for all ages. Cheer on your favorite player in the 3 on 3 basketball tournament, check out a skateboarding competition, dance to the sound of Oakland’s best DJs and a whole lot more! Take BART to West Oakland and walk 15 minutes to DeFremery Park.

Millbrae Art & Wine Festival by Millbrae

The festive spirit and flavor of the Big Easy is coming to the Bay Area for the 49th annual Millbrae Art & Wine Festival. It’s the Bay Area’s biggest Labor Day weekend event with huge crowds transforming the city into a fantastically fun Mardi Gras-style celebration featuring two sun-splashed days of live music on stage and street. The free fun runs from 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Ride BART to Millbrae and walk seven minutes to Broadway and Victoria Ave.

Fog City Flea by Embarcadero

Check out a brand new flea market at the Ferry Building. Fog City Flea will bring an eclectic lineup of makers and merchants from across the Bay with offers of handcrafted jewelry, apparel, accessories, apothecary, housewares, furnishings, and well-edited vintage. It’ll happen every Sunday from 10am-5pm until November 17. Take BART to Embarcadero and walk four minutes to the Ferry Building.

Brazilian Day & Lavagem Festival by North Berkeley

Casa de Cultura in Berkeley once again throws a day-long party and ritual celebrating Brazilian Independence Day with an annual lavagem (blessing) and procession for world peace, live Brazilian music and DJs, dancing, food, drinks, and lots of folks dressed in white. This free event runs from 10am-7pm. Take BART to North Berkeley and walk 13 minutes to 1901 San Pablo Ave.

Asian Art Museum Free Admission Day by Civic Center/UN Plaza

Normally $15 for admission, this Sunday see one of the largest collections of Asian art in the world for free this Sunday at the Asian Art Museum. Admission hours are between 10am-5pm. Please note that special exhibits may require an additional fee. Take BART to Civic Center/UN Plaza and walk four minutes to the museum.

Hiero Day: Hip Hop Music Fest & Block Party by 12th St/Oakland City Center

The “Best Hip-Hop Festival of the East Bay” is a one-day music festival combining community, local food, music, apparel, live art, crafts and hip-hop culture. Hiero Day hosts 3 stages showcasing over 40 local and internationally renowned artists from Hip-Hop, Jazz, Electronic, Alternative and R&B genres. The event runs from 11am-7pm. Ticket prices range from $40-$199.93. Take BART to 12th St/Oakland City Center and walk 15 minutes to 3rd St. and Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

Il Giro di San Francisco Bike Race by Embarcadero

Il Giro di San Francisco (formerly the “San Francisco Gran Prix”) is an annual bike race around the streets of San Francisco that’s had competitors racing around the city since 1975. It’s free for spectators to come and watch. Races begin at 8am with the women’s race. The races take place all day until the final pro race at 3pm, so pump up your tires and roll on over to see this cycling race by San Francisco’s waterfront. Take BART to Embarcadero and ride four minutes or walk 13 minutes to Vallejo and Front Streets.
