BARTable Spots for Last-Minute Holiday Grub

You know the drill—you get a last-minute text or email invitation to a holiday gathering and are asked to bring something and then you panic. Worse, is that you have no time to fit in grocery shopping and cooking! Good thing BART is within blocks of fabulous prepared food purveyors and carefully curated wine and spirits shops to rescue you in your time of need. They’re all set up for you to run in and pick up what you need, relieving you of a little stress during this time of year.

3639 18th Street, San Francisco

Bi-Rite has three menus—Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year’s—available for online ordering and in-store pick up so there’s no need to stress if you’re in the vicinity of BART’s 16th Street Mission Station. Just give them 24 hours to prepare amazing dishes like Stuffed Delicata Squash with Brown Rice, Root Vegetables and Miso, Butternut and Apple Soup, and Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Cider Glaze and Pomegranates. If you don’t have time to call ahead, we’re pretty sure you won’t be disappointed with their prepared food case, which will still have plenty of holiday-friendly fare. 2815 Diamond Street, San Francisco

This bustling (and bursting) Glen Park neighborhood market has everything you need for a last-minute food item. Their bakery creates several different types of breads and pastries, in addition to other seasonal treats like holiday cookies and challah. Peruse the prepared food section and you’ll get dizzy from the array of offerings. It’s a great spot for those wanting more traditional fare like Orange-Glazed Turkey, Roasted Duck Legs with Rosemary and Garlic, and Butternut Squash Lasagna. Contact catering to place an order, or pop in between train stops.

2901 Mission Street, San Francisco

In 2007, Mission Pie opened on the dream that they could feed the world delicious pie while collaborating with local nonprofits that reduce barriers to employment. Today, they not only produce a dozen or so different seasonal pie varieties every day, but have also become a place for the community to gather and share in a meal (or slice of pie). Holiday pies include pumpkin, apple, walnut, pear raspberry, apple blackberry, and banana cream. Needing a vegan dessert? Look no further than their apple version. Best to call and order ahead.

101 The Embarcadero, San Francisco

This popular wine shop never disappoints in having just the right assortment of wine to suit most tastes. There’s a great mix of California classics and old- and new-world varietals that don’t appear on the shelves of big-box stores. High marks for attentive customer service so go ahead and ask questions about boutique producers and food pairings. Look for special occasion bottles of sparkling wine and champagne during the holidays. They also offer a selection of craft spirits and beer; and frequent tastings means that you might be able to taste a wine before you buy.
