Though known for its WWII-era shipyards and maritime scene, Richmond, Calif. is so much more than its shipbuilding past.

First settled by the Ohlone tribe around 5,000 years ago, Richmond has laid host to Spanish explorers, the western terminus of the Santa Fe Railroad, a massive refinery, and one of the largest Black populations in the state.

Food, arts, and culture has sprung up over the years, making Richmond a new destination for Bay Area residents and out-of-towners alike.

We’ve compiled some of our favorite spots – all BARTable – below. Keep reading to discover how to spend 36 minutes in Richmond.

We’ll need sustenance for our journey, and there’s no better spot to fill your stomach than El Garage (1428 Macdonald Ave). Known for their gooey quesabirria tacos, El Garage started as a popup before opening a brick-and-mortar shop just a six-minute walk from the BART station. Don’t forget to grab a refreshing hibiscus agua fresca!

Lace up your walking shoes – err, boots. We’re headed to Los Leyva Western Wear (516 23rd St, Unit A), a unique shop nestled just a 14-minute walk from the station. Here, you’ll find cowboy boots and hats that will make your heart sing. Choosing a pair might be the hardest part.

Check the website to see what’s on-view when you visit, or drop in for a class – they have offerings for all ages in a variety of media.

It’s high time for some greenery! We’ll find it at Unity Park (1605 Ohio Ave), a 12-minute walk from the station. Here, you’ll find biking and walking paths, a community garden, a sprawling lawn, plaza, and children’s play area – there’s undoubtedly something for the whole family. Street art and murals abound, as well.
