SF Jazz | Cassandra Wilson: The Music of Billie Holiday

Following her sublime Season 2 duet performance with pianist Jason Moran, two-time GRAMMY winner Cassandra Wilson returns with music from her singular 2015 recording Coming Forth By Day, an original homage to Billie Holiday on the centennial of her birth. Celebrated for her rich, dusky sound, improvisational and interpretive gifts, Wilson has expanded jazz singing with her exploration of standards and old blues, country and folk songs, music by Joni Mitchell and Miles Davis.

Wilson sings songs associated with Lady Day in her own daring and intuitive way, in stunning versions infused with strings arranged by the esteemed composer Van Dyke Parks and performed by musicians from Nick Cave’s alternative rock band The Bad Seeds as well as Wilson’s regular band, among them the fluid pianist Jon Cowherd.

Show runs May 19 - 22
